Homemade Facial Cleansers

Using homemade facial cleansers is one of the best natural things you can do for your complexion.

Your face is delicate and needs a delicate touch, so using natural ingredients that work to eliminate dirt and oils will protect your skin from drying and harmful scratching.

Below are some of the finest homemade facial cleansers that will do just that, effectively cleanse your skin of the dirt and oils yet they won't strip your skin's smoothness and elasticity.

Keep in mind that alpha-hydroxy acids are what most facial cleansers use and are available in most foods we use. You will find these acids in things like milk, lemon juice, tomatoes, grapes, oranges and blackberries.

These foods actually exfoliate the dead skin cells naturally from your skin. It's important to remember that getting rid of the top layer of dead skin cells helps the moisturizers, toners and other ingredients you use on your skin to reach the rest of your skin cells.

In the time it takes to read this you could
have take 10-15 years off your face

Recipes for Homemade Facial Cleansers

These cleansers are easy to make and are made from ingredients you have in your own kitchen cabinet. If you don't happen to have the ingredients needed, you can find them at From Nature with Love

Basic Clay Facial Mask

• 2-3 oz. cosmetic clay
• 1-2 oz. powdered herbs
• water or hydrosol
• 1-2 drops essential oil added at the time of application (optional)

Choose a cosmetic clay and herbs that are suitable for your skin type. Citrus peel powders add astringency, rose petal powder adds fragrance are anti-bacterial ingredients.

Other ingredients that can be added are milk powders, honey powder, oatmeal and sea vegetables.

Mix the powdered ingredients to make 4 oz. of dry clay facial and store in a 4 oz. jar. Clay facial masks should not be stored pre-mixed with the wetting agent. To use, add approximately 1/2 oz. of the dry clay facial herb blend to a small bowl and mix enough warm water or hydrosol to make a paste. Add a drop or 2 of essential oil if desired. Apply to the skin in a gentle circular motion, and leave it to dry for about 15-20 minutes. Wash off with warm water. If the skin feels tight, a light oil such as camelina can be applied afterwards.

Experiment with other wetting agents. Strawberry puree acts like an alpha-hydroxy, cucumber puree cools the skin, yogurt cools and softens the skin, and milk removes dead skin cells and softens the skin.

Herbal Steam Facial

An Herbal homemade facial that works wonders for your skin and your spirit, I love it!

Here's a nice spa treatment facial that you can do at home:

Bring about 4 cups of water to a boil and add 4 tablespoons of your favorite herb, I like lavender but you can use whatever herb you like. Pour the herb water into a large deep bowl or pot. Slowly place your face over the bowl and cover your head with a towel. Be very careful as the water will be hot so start slowly.

Let the steam to build up around your face. Sit with the steam penetrating your face for about 10 minutes, don't go longer. The steam will invigorate your face and your face will also get tremendous moisturizing benefits from the steam meaning your skin will feel softer and moister and look younger. Follow the steam treatment with a nice homemade toner or astringent immediately after while pores are still open then follow that with your favorite moisturizer, I personally like Oil of Olay.

Luscious Lemon Cleanser

  • 1 tablespoon corn meal
  • 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons finely ground oats
  • 1 teaspoon distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon pulp
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt

Mix all ingredients together in the order presented. Wet your face and then apply rubbing gently in a circular motion. Remove with warm damp cloth. Mixture can be kept in your refrigerator for several weeks.

Brown Sugar Cleanser

A good facial cleanser and scrub is to mix honey and brown sugar. Rub it on your face for about a minute and then rinse. Follow that by putting the honey on your face all by itself for about 30 minutes. Rinse, your skin and notice how soft and supple it is.

Sugar and salt are very effective natural facial cleansers. You can simply add them to your favorite skin cleansers and rub gently to exfoliate.
