Hyperpigmentation
Age spots, commonly known as hyperpigmention, is usually a harmless skin condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin.
This skin darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin.
Hyperpigmentation can affect all types of skin colors and races.
Anyone who's gotten lots of sun will commonly develop dark skin pigment, it typically occurs as we age, however it has been know to appear in younger skin as well. Hyperpigmentation can occur on the face but it can also occur on the hands as well or anywhere that has received an excess of sun.
Prescription creams containing hydroquinone will lighten the skin. The prescription bleaches contain an extra dose of hydorquinone, while over-the-counter bleaches have less hydorquinone. Some more heavy duty prescription bleaches may also contain tretinoin and cortisone. More on how to get rid of brown spots on the skin.
Laser treatments are also being used for treatment of hyperpigmentation and they can do it quite effectively without any scarring.
