Stop Hair Loss

What Can You Do To Halt Hair Loss?

Some hair loss is perfectly normal. Everyone, male and female, naturally loses 50 to 100 hairs a day. However, if you appear to be losing too much hair, or you notice thinning or balding spots, there are several things you can do to stop hair loss.

Adopt a Healthy Diet

I know -- not the diet again!  But it's true, tour hair is sensitive to your diet. Very low calorie diets and eating disorders can be the cause of hair loss.

Hair is made up of protein, so it naturally follows that you could experience hair loss if you don’t ensure that your diet contains sufficient protein. Not getting enough protein is not necessarily a problem in developed countries, but increasing your protein intake further can still help you stop hair loss. Eating fish is especially beneficial, owing to the abundance of oils in fish.

Make sure you are getting enough B vitamins, vitamin C, folic acid and biotin. Normally you will ingest these nutrients if you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. 5 a day is the popular theme.

Shampooing

Ensuring that your hair and scalp stay clean can also help to stop hair loss. It’s recommended that your hair is washed at least every other day. While you’re shampooing, be sure to also massage the scalp and hairline well. This will increase circulation to your hair follicles. Using nizoral shampoo may also help put a stop to hair loss.

Conditioners

Conditioning and moisturizing also helps. Dry brittle hair not only falls out, but also breaks off. Protein conditioners — especially those with hydrolyzed human hair keratin proteins — will give the best results. Leave the conditioner on for three to five minutes before rinsing.

Protect From UV Radiation

Just like your skin, your hair can also get sunburned. If your hair is also really thin, your scalp may get sunburned also. You should protect your exposed scalp from UV radiation by using a good sunscreen. Protect the hair itself by covering it or by using a leave-in conditioner with sun block.

Natural Remedies

Some people have found that taking silica capsules can stop hair loss. Ginko biloba may help as well because it is designed to improve the circulation to the scalp. Yet another common natural remedy is to rinse your hair in a mix of cider vinegar and sage tea once or twice a week. While doing this massage your scalp with your fingertips, it not only feels good it helps circulation and hair growth.

Minoxidil (Rogaine®)

Minoxidil is an over-the-counter medication that stops hair loss. It is FDA approved and can be used by both men and women. You apply minoxidil direct to your scalp. However, it does take a few weeks before you will any improvement can be seen. Minoxidil helps a lot of people, but you have to keep on using it. As soon as you stop using it you will start losing your hair again.

Prescriptions

There are prescription medications, available from your doctor, designed specifically to stop hair loss. Propecia is the main one. Avodart is also used, but it is not FDA approved for the treatment of hair loss.

Your hair loss may be caused by hormonal disturbances, or other causes, and taking medications designed to treat those problems should also help to stop your hair loss.

There are quite a few things you can do for yourself to stop hair loss. If these don’t work, you should always check with your doctor to see if there is an underlying cause for your hair loss. You can discuss further treatment options with her.
